Adult Diapers
Make Life Easier For Those With Incontinence

Adult diapers are extremely beneficial for those dealing with incontinence. Although the term may be a little embarrassing, the truth is, these products help protect against skin breakdown, prevent awkward mishaps, and can even improve quality of life. They also ease the burden on caregivers, making it much easier to care for incontinent loved ones at home.

Adult diapers are disposable or reusable. Disposable diapers are certainly more convenient since you can just take them off and throw them away. However, the cost can mount up quickly, and they are hard on the environment. Reusable diapers can be washed and used over and over again, but it takes quite a bit of work to wash them every day and control urine odors.

Adult diapers also come in various sizes and unfortunately, sizing isn't consistent among brands. Be sure to read the sizing label on the package to get the best fit. Diapers that are too large will bunch up and be visible under your clothing. If they are too small they will be uncomfortable and not provide optimum coverage. If you are extra small or extra large you may need to obtain adult diapers from a medical supply store or online retailer. Standard sized adult diapers can be purchased at most grocery and drug stores, with many brands to choose from.

Adult diapers come in different styles for best protection and convenience. Some brands make different diapers for men and women, while others are unisex. Some slip on like underwear while others are designed like baby diapers that open fully and then close with sticky strips. Caregivers may find it more convenient to use the second kind, especially for loved ones confined to a bed.

Controlling urine odor is a challenge that goes along with being incontinent. Wet disposable diapers should be placed in a plastic bag and tied off, or placed in a diaper pail until they can be removed from the home. Reusable diapers should be rinsed immediately and washed as soon as possible. Vinegar added to the wash will help eliminate urine odor from fabric. It is best to avoid harsh detergents and bleach unless you give the garments an extra rinse or skin irritation may occur.

Whether using reusable or disposable adult diapers, it is important to change them as soon as they become wet or soiled in order to prevent skin irritation and breakdown. Wash the area and let it dry completely before putting on a clean diaper. Skin care products may help protect the skin when diapers are worn constantly. These contain petroleum jelly, zinc oxide, or some other ingredient that blocks moisture. These can be purchased in the incontinence section of the drug store or you can buy products made for baby diaper rash.

Another thing to consider with adult diapers is the materials they are made from. Some brands have latex fibers in them, especially if they are designed to be stretchable. Many people have sensitivities to latex, or develop sensitivity over time with constant exposure. This can cause uncomfortable rashes and itching that can be avoided by purchasing diapers that are latex free.

Adult diapers can be conveniently purchased at local stores, but if you are uncomfortable buying them in public, or have difficulty getting to the store, you can order them online. Some medical supply companies will deliver them on a monthly basis so you never have to worry about running out.

Incontinence is a common problem among the elderly, but it doesn't have to interfere with quality of life. Adult diapers help ensure you can stay active and maintain a social life without worry of embarrassing accidents.
